Limits or Limitless?

There is saying in philosophy that “What we see is not true, What we listen is also not true”. This is also mentioned in ‘Thirukkural’, a classic of couplets by Thiruvalluvar. But why is it so? Does it make any sense? Is it really true?

Our human mind (Intellect) is basically limited by our 5 senses. To our human intellectual mind whatever this limited 5 senses brings to us we believe as truth. In our case we can just examine two mostly used senses, human vision and hearing or auditory perception.

Humans can see objects only in visible spectrum. The visible spectrum is the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to (can be detected by) the human eye. Electromagnetic radiation in this range of wavelengths is called visible light or simply light. A typical human eye will respond to wavelengths from about 390 to 750 nm. In terms of frequency, this corresponds to a band in the vicinity of 400–790 THz. A light-adapted eye generally has its maximum sensitivity at around 555 nm (540 THz), in the green region of the optical spectrum. The spectrum does not, however, contain all the colors that the human eyes and brain can distinguish. Unsaturated colors such as pink, or purple variations such as magenta, are absent, for example, because they can be made only by a mix of multiple wavelengths. We cannot see anything above or below the visible spectrum.

Humans can generally hear sounds with frequencies between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz (the audio range or hearing range) although this range varies significantly with age, occupational hearing damage, and gender. The majority of people can no longer hear 20,000 Hz by the time they are teenagers, and progressively lose the ability to hear higher frequencies as they get older. Most human speech communication takes place between 200 and 8,000 Hz and the human ear is most sensitive to frequencies around 1,000-3,500 Hz. Sound above the hearing range is known as ultrasound, and that below the hearing range as infrasound. We cannot hear either ultrasound or infrasound.

Hope now it makes some sense why it is said that what we see is not true or what we hear is not true. Our human mind has limits and it operates only within time and space. But all the limits we have discussed now are only for our Mind, but not for us (Soul). Soul is our true Self. We are limitless and Infinite. We are not bound by time and space. We are eternal. Our mind operates in lower frequency and where us Soul operates in higher frequency.

When we are born, the first thought arise in our mind is “I”, the Ego which attaches us to our body and mind (lower self) but not to our true Self (higher or inner Self). We need to lose our ego, lose our mind to know our true Self, to know our limitless nature. Yoga, meditation, religion, and all other spiritual practices have a common goal of losing our lower self or Ego by surrendering to God or meditating on Soul or practicing different Yoga’s (Raja, Hatha, Jnana, Bhakti,…)

In other words we are lower frequency receivers. We need to tune in to higher frequencies (like radio or TV) to gain the true knowledge from Source. What we see after tuning in to higher frequency is known as Divine Vision or Intuition. Similarly what we listen after tuning in to higher frequency is known as Divine Hearing or Clairvoyance. Even some might have experienced it occasionally in our day-to-day life. Yogis, Sages, Siddhars and Rishis have fully developed these capabilities through spiritual Practices with complete dedication and intense practice in order to become a perfect being! 🙂

  1. Excellent post! I also believe that our souls, the real “self” can perceive more that what our five senses perceive. This post gives us a fresh perspective on eternity and the concept of God.
